History of Bingo ? What Really Happened!

No one knows what really happened in terms of the history of bingo, there are a few versions of this story and many people seem to agree that the closest in type game to the present day bingo was an Italian Lottery. But then again some historians argue that lottery type games were also used in Elizabethan Britain round about the same century.

They also maintain that UK bingo could have as easily stemmed historically from this lottery Elizabethan, and would have done so far more easily than by enculturation from Italy which supposedly came to the UK, via the US.

If you think about it logically, it makes a good deal more sense that lottery type games similar to bingo, have their own roots in British culture. These have been popularly played through the ages, however, during many era’s in history, playing lottery type games have been alternately banned for women or for the poor in the UK. The only thing this actually did was cause playing these games to go underground.

There is a consistent history of this type of gaming throughout recorded history in the UK. There is a report available which was specifically commissioned, and indicates that bingo had its beginnings in the UK as early a 1716. After reading this, it became very clear to me that the UK has its own historical development regarding the game of bingo, and it was even called bingo before Edwin Lowe in the US laid claim to the name.

This gentleman claims a great deal of fame regarding the discovery of bingo, but if this was the case, why was he unable to patent it? Because the game was already in the public domain, that is why! And this gives rise to many doubts in me anyway. The history of bingo that we regularly read online as being documented, to me is actually a crock of rubbish in terms of how the game is related to the British market. My postulate is that the way in which online Bingo has become available to the UK market is a lot more different than many so-called historians seem to believe.
